Dr. Karen English, MD
Dr. English grew up all over the world in an Air Force family. She attended college at Mount Holyoke in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and graduated with a degree in Biology. She then took a position as a research assistant at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, in the Department of Immunology, in a year-long international exchange program for technical experience. Her love of travel then led her to Austria, where she worked in a ski resort, before returning to her hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana. She spent two years as a research assistant in Biochemistry at LSU Medical Center, before attending medical school. She graduated from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1994 and completed a 3-year residency in Pediatrics, serving as Chief Resident.
After residency, Dr. English worked for several years as a Pediatrician in Austin, Texas. Her desire for land and horses led her to the Elgin area, and she opened Elgin Pediatrics in 2003. Once her daughter graduated High School, Dr. English was able to begin a 2-year fellowship in Integrative Medicine, under Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Integrative Medicine combines conventional medicine with complementary therapies, taking into account all aspects of wellness, including mind, body, and spirit. Dr. English wants to partner with her patients, by helping them through times of illness, and also by promoting overall wellness and illness prevention.
Dr. English enjoys spending time with friends and family, riding horses, art, traveling and experiencing other cultures, and gardening. She has been an avid runner and has completed two marathons. She and her husband are delighted to spend time with their grandson. She also enjoys watching her patients grow from infancy to young adulthood and is rewarded when her former patients entrust the care of their own children with her at Elgin Pediatrics.

She returned to the Austin area two years later to work at Dell Children's Medical Center and attend the University of Texas once again for her Masters of Science in Nursing.
